to the artists, designers and craftspeople who think I call their work kitsch... this is NOT the case, it refers to my own work

colourful African design in Zürich

Lea Kray owns the delightful little shop Joy Jewels in Zürich. At least once a year she travels to Africa to collect African items made by local artists and artisans. Some of these are unique and one-of-a-kind pieces. The shop sells both traditional and new design.

It took me a very long time to choose one of the African wax fabrics, I simply wanted all of them.

Heidi Lerch - sculptor & painter

A walk through the old town of Zürich brings nice discoveries.
A small gallery caught my attention because of the colourful work displayed. Heidi Lerch exhibits and works on her artwork here. Acrylics on canvas and painted constructions with wood, I really loved this.

Heidi Lerch was in the middle of creating a new series of works, behind the gallery is her studio. Her latest works are not to be photographed right now as she is still working on the new concept.
Her site is not up to date yet, but she will work on it.

Richard Jackson - part 2 - the Upside down Room

At Hauser & Wirth in the Löwenbräuareal-Zürich
'The upstairs gallery houses Upside Down Room, a kinetic installation Richard Jackson made in 1996 but which has never been shown before. This is a space of its own with two sets of walls, the outer made of black and white striped paintings, the inner of steel perforated with tiny circles. As the viewer enters the piece the outer walls turn by 180 degrees disturbing their orientation.'

I did go into the room but did not wait until the walls turned to be trapped for the next ten minutes. I wasn't sure that I wasn't going to be sick by the visual effect. And after three hours of walking there was still a lot to visit after this.

Löwenbräu building - Zürich

The Löwenbräu-areal in Zürich houses several galleries, the Migros Museum for contemporary art and the Kunsthalle.

It reminds me of my visit to the Belgo building in Montreal (all posts on the Belgo galleries HERE); an old building with stairs, corridors and doors leading to different galleries and exhibitions. The Löwenbräu is smaller, so there is less to discover.

Unfortunately the Migros Museum, the Kunsthalle and a few of the galleries were closed because new exhibitions were set up, or old ones were dismantled.
But without many exhibitions taking place I take the time to explore empty rooms and peek through the open doors from closed galleries. In the Belgo-Montreal I discovered I loved to take pictures of open doors revealing the hidden. And no ... in general I'm not a nosy person.

But ... a few galleries were open
